The Groups feature enables you to organise references by topic or other feature such as research method, assignment code, thesis chapter. If you are doing a literature review or systematic review you can use the Groups feature to manage the selection process.
1. In EndNote, click on Groups > Create Group
2. Name the group and press <Enter>
3. The new group appears in the left hand navigation pane. Highlight and drag and drop one or more references into the group.
4. Alternatively, if you have performed a search and exported it, you can create a group for those references. Ensure that all references you want to add are highlighted, the go to Groups>Add References to>Create Custom Group. Name the new group appropriately.
Groups may be grouped together in Group Sets.
1. Click Groups Menu>Create Group Set
2. Name the Group Set and press <Enter>.
3. You can opposite click on the Group Set to create new groups within that set, or drag existing groups into the Group Set.
4. If you are syncing your library, it is advisable to name the Groups in the Group Set with a common prefix, as EndNote Online does not support Group Sets. This way your groups should appear in alphabetical order together in EndNote Online:
With a Smart Group you create a Search Strategy first. Any existing references in your library that match the search will be added to the group instantly and new references matching the search strategy will also be added. A Smart Group is indicated in the navigation panel by a cog symbol - see the EBM group in the screen shot above.
To create a smart group Click Groups Menu>Create Smart Group. A search box opens. Here is an example of a search created. You can use the Boolean AND and OR in your search or change the fields to be searched.
Note: Deleting a group does not delete the references from the library. In order to delete a reference, you need to be in the All References pane, and drag the reference to the Trash.
1. In the left hand navigation panel, highlight the group name and opposite click.
2. Select Delete Group.
