How to backup your library files

Backing up your library

Regular backing up of your library is as important as backing up your associated Word documents. Backup is best done in several places, and done regularly as you build your library.

  1. Use File>Compressed Library.enlx command in the EndNote program to back up both the .enl file and .Data folder.
  2. When asked, select "with File Attachments" so that PDfs and other file attachments are backed up as well. Click on Next.
  3. Backup file can be saved on another drive, including such as an external hard drive, USB (less reliable), or cloud based storage such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Add today's date to the file name so you can most easily recognise the most recent, in the event of computer failure or loss of library. Do not rely on the Sync function for backup.

Note: As you add references, it is not necessary to save all the time, as you might with a Word Document, but regular Backups are recommended. EndNote saves new references automatically.
