Adding References to Your EndNote Library

A wide variety of reference types can be added to your library, from scholarly articles and books, to multimedia, websites and many more. They can be added with any of the following methods:

Choosing a reference type

When manually adding a new reference, or in some cases editing references you have imported, you will need to decide which type is best to use. EndNote comes with a wide variety of reference types, here are some suggestions:

 
Publication Reference Type Necessary fields to enter Comments
Book Book Author, Year, Title, Place Published, Publisher, edition in format 2nd or 4th etc- do not add ed. For print books with one or more authors.
Book with editors Edited Book Editor(s) Year, Title, Place Published, Publisher, edition in format 2nd or 4th etc- do not add ed. For books with chapters written by different authors.
Book chapter (in Edited Book) Book Section Author of Chapter, Year, Title of Chapter, Editor(s) of Book, Title of Book, Place Published, Publisher, Page Nos., edition in format 2nd or 4th etc- do not add ed. Only use for chapters of edited books - for chapters of a book with authors, reference the whole book.
eBook Electronic Book Author, Year, Title, Edition (in format 2nd or 4th etc- do not add ed.) Type of Medium,URL Could be online as a pdf (such as reports online), or in web format (html).
eBook Chapter Electronic Book Section Author of Chapter, Year, Title of Chapter, Editor(s) of Book, Year, Title of Book, Page Nos., edition (in format 2nd or 4th etc- do not add ed.), URL or DOI As above use eBook type, if citing a chapter in a book with overall author(s).
Journal article, print or electronic Journal article Author, Year, Title, Journal title, Volume, Issue,Pages, DOI or for online without DOI the URL Check the style you are using to see if DOI is required. (APA 6th-7th does).
Newspaper article online Newspaper Article Reporter/Author,Year,Issue,Date,Name of Newspaper,Pages, URL Pages may not apply if online
Report Report Author,Year,Title,Series Title, Place Published, Institution. Use for printed reports only, use eBook for online reports
Online video eg YouTube Online Multimedia Created by, Year,Title,Type of Work,URL Type of work: could just be "Online multimedia" or "Online videorecording"
UpToDate article Electronic book section Author of Chapter, Year, Title of Chapter, Title of Book = UpToDate, Editor of Book, URL Reference as a chapter in a book titled UpToDate
Web page / Site Web Page Author, Year, URL -if date accessed required use Access Date (month and day) and Access Year Check the style for format of access date, could be day before or after month.
